What is Quality Assurance Process?

Project Management Institute (PMI) defined Quality Assurance (QA) in the fourth edition of PMBOK guide as “the process of auditing the quality requirement and the result from quality control to ensure quality standards and operational definition are being used”. Quality assurance focuses on the process of a project to find a deficit in the process. A standard process will increase the chance of having a high-quality product. It is a proactive quality process. The aim of the QA team is to investigate, test and develop processes so that defects do not arise when the product is being developed. In another word, it is about making sure that the project team is doing the right thing in the right way.

The QA department supports all stakeholders of the project including project team, senior organization manager, customer and even customers and proves the project with continuous process improvement to achieve the planned quality. Quality metrics, Project Management Plan, Work Performance information and Quality control Measurement.

 Quality Assurance Technique

Total Quality Management (TQM), Trend Analysis, Cost of Analysis, Cause and effect Diagram and Quality Audit are examples of tools and techniques to develop the Quality assurance.

For instance, Quality Audit document is a structured review to ensure the project activities is in line with organizational policies, process, and guidelines. It will describe the best approach to perform activities, deficiencies and the gaps in the process. It shares the best practice of implementation of project task in the organization or even in the industry.

 These should be specific tasks in your work breakdown structure and should be tied to specific risks identified in your risk management plan. 

 How to develop Quality Assurance process?

Project quality assurance should be well-documented. There should be a specific task in WBS describing in details how a specific risk (which is already identified and registered) is going to be handled. It is a great source of lessons learned and a means to reveal the quality are being monitored and controlled in the project. Furthermore, it has a key role in satisfying the customer/buyer that the organization is developing a product to the satisfactory level of standard. Some customers may ask their supplier to produce their Quality assurance document in the tender.

British Standard Institution as one of the various international and national organization publishes guidelines and policies about Quality Management and Quality assurance. Examples of the standards shown in the table.
